Plantar fasciitis, heel spur: comprehensive evaluation and personalized treatment in Montreal

Understand

What is heel pain?

Heel pain is a condition that can make our days and activities very difficult. Baxter's neuritis, plantar fasciitis, and panniculitis are all examples of diagnoses that can be associated with pain in this area. To avoid complications, it is important to consult a professional to treat it according to the state of the pain (acute or chronic) and its intensity.

Plantar fasciitis, the most common cause, manifests as sharp pain under the heel, especially during the first steps in the morning. Heel spurs, often associated, are bony growths that develop in response to chronic inflammation of the plantar fascia.

At our podiatry clinic, treatments depend on your general health and the specific situation. They vary between stretching, taping, foot orthotics, cortisone injections, shockwave therapy, and much more.

Consult the Clinique Podiatrique Mont-Royal and Griffintown for an accurate diagnosis and a treatment plan tailored to your condition.

Treatments offered in clinic

The treatment for heel pain is adapted according to the diagnosis made by your podiatrist. The therapeutic approach varies depending on the identified cause, the state of the pain, and your lifestyle.

Custom Foot Orthoses

Personalized insoles designed to correct foot biomechanics and redistribute pressure. They support the arch, reduce tension on the fascia, and promote lasting healing in daily life.

Shockwave Therapy

Technology that sends acoustic waves into the tissues to stimulate healing and reduce chronic pain. Particularly effective for plantar fasciitis resistant to conservative treatments.

Cortisone Injection

Targeted anti-inflammatory injection directly at the site of pain for rapid relief. Reserved for cases where inflammation is significant, this procedure is performed in-clinic under the supervision of your podiatrist.

Everything about heel pain

Find answers to the most common questions about heel pain and its treatment.

Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the plantar fascia, a band of fibrous tissue that connects the heel to the toes and supports the arch of the foot. It typically manifests as sharp pain under the heel, especially during the first steps in the morning or after a prolonged period of rest. It is the most common cause of heel pain in adults.
A heel spur is a bony growth that forms where the plantar fascia attaches to the heel. It is often a consequence of chronic plantar fasciitis. Contrary to popular belief, it is not the spur itself that causes the pain, but rather the inflammation of the surrounding fascia. Treatment therefore aims to reduce this inflammation rather than removing the spur.
Several factors can contribute to heel pain: prolonged standing, a sudden increase in physical activity, wearing unsupportive or ill-fitting shoes, being overweight, flat or high-arched feet, and a lack of flexibility in the calf muscles. Athletes, people who work on their feet, and individuals over 40 are particularly at risk.
